Die Agri Securitas Trustfonds het vandag tydens die Trustee vergadering ‘n donasie van Corteva Agriscience ontvang vir die beveiliging van landelike boerderygemeenskappe. Hier ontvang die voorsitter van die Trustfonds, Japie Grobler, ‘n tjek van Tony Esmeraldo, Hoof uitvoerende bestuurder van Corteva.

The safety of the farming community in South Africa is a priority for the Agri Securitas Trust Fund; therefore, it has recently again allocated more than R1,5 million to approximately 420 farmers and 15 500 farm workers across South Africa via 12 farmer associations.

The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, released the latest national crime statistics this morning. It is disturbing that, according to the police, 49 farm murders occurred during the 2019/2020 financial year. This is 49 murders too many and has deprived the country of strategic skills in the agricultural sector and robbed of the expertise that is so sorely needed to contribute towards economic growth and food security.

Agri SA is deeply concerned about the rural crime situation and strongly condemns the attacks and crimes on our farming and rural communities. Crime on agriculture has a detrimental impact –not only with regard to our national interests but specifically in food production and the role it plays in rural stability and the rural economy.

Farmers are suffering tremendous losses because of an increase in product and livestock theft, the illegal slaughter of livestock and the plundering of farms. This trend could escalate during the next few months. The release of prisoners, unemployment and accompanying poverty may contribute to this.

With the implementation of this technology, farming communities are fighting back to curb crime. Communities are not only involved with the processes and structures of the Rural Safety Strategy, but they are also actively resisting the crime onslaught by implementing new initiatives.

The Agri Securitas Trust Fund which was established in 1999, has to date protected at least 500 farms and nearly 3,000 farmworkers against rural crime in Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape.

Monsanto het tydens die Agri SA Kongres ‘n bedrag van R1 miljoen aan die Agri Securitas Fonds oorhandig. Die fonds poog om addisionele geld beskikbaar te stel vir landbou gemeenskappe sodat veiligheid verbeter kan word
